Facial Rejuvenation with Platelet-Rich Plasma

Our bodies naturally produce stem cells that help us heal by stimulating the growth of collagen, as well as blood vessels that deliver oxygen to bodily tissues. Platelets and growth factors found in the blood stimulate stem cells, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains 3 to 5 times as many of these substances as normal blood. PRP has been used for years to heal wounds and for other purposes. Today, PRP therapies are also available for facial rejuvenation and other areas of aesthetic medicine. Research suggests that PRP therapies may eventually be able to treat everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scarring and rosacea.

Over the last several years there has been much excitement surrounding applications of plateletrich plasma (PRP) in aesthetic medicine, including facial rejuvenation. Increasing the number of platelets and growth factors in the blood can have regenerative effects on the skin, slowing or reversing the signs of aging. Dr. McAlister can use PRP treatments in areas where derma fillers, neurotoxins and lasers aren’t always effective, including around the eyes and mouth.

PRP treatment for the PERIOCULAR (eyes) PERIOCURLAR (mouth)

Dr. McAlister will use platelet-rich plasma therapies to treat the areas around the eyes and mouth. PRP injections may be effective in delicate areas such as the tear trough, adding plumpness and improving skin texture. They can also be used to treat craw’s feet. Platelet-rich plasma is also contained in filler products used to treat deep or fine lines and wrinkles in the perioral area- the area around the mouth.

Plasma Therapy for Hair Loss

How does PRP help in treating hair loss?

There are many benefits of using PRP treatment to promote healing for hair growth. Highly concentrated growth factors in the form of platelets have been shown to generate new hair growth, thicken thinned out hair, and make hair grow thicker and healthier. If the hair follicles or hair roots are healthy, the growth of the hair is healthy. Hair follicles survive on the nutrition they get from blood supply. If we introduce platelets by administering platelet rich plasma (PRP) in the area of damaged hair folli cles, it amplifies the body’s naturally occurring wound healing mechanism.

Procedure- How is PRP therapy performed?

First, 60 ml of blood is collected from your vein. It’s very similar to having a routine blood test performed at your doctor’s clinic. The blood is collected and placed in a sterile FDA approved container designed to process out the platelets, stem cells and growth factors. The container is then placed in a centrifuge where your blood is spun for 14 minutes. When the centrifuge has stopped spinning, your blood components have now been separated. The concentrated platelets have been separated from your normal whole blood. The PRP that contains abundant growth factors and stem cells is now ready to be applied to the scalp.

Post Procedure

The procedure takes 20-30 minutes depending on amount of hair loss. Since an inflammatory process is initiated at the wound site, there may be mild pain or discomfort felt by the patient at the site where PRP is injected. Patients are advised not to take any anti-inflammatory medication since it may interfere in the natural healing process of PRP. Patients generally see results after 3 months and some patients elect to receive this therapy once a year. PRP does not pose any danger of allergy, hypersensitivity, or foreign-body reaction and it is a safe choice for many patients.

Botox for Face and Underarms

Facial Botox

Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes, collagen depletion, or damage caused by free radicals. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Botox blocks the release of a substance called acetylcholine. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe wrinkles to form. Botox is also very effective for migraine (chronic) headaches.

Botox for Underarm Profuse Sweating

Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections can reduce underarm sweating that is not due to an underlying medical condition. Botox is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the temporary treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Botox solution is injected with a small needle into the skin to target the sweat glands. Reduced underarm sweating is typically reported 1-2 weeks after treatment and effects last for approximately 6 months or more in some cases.

Spider Vein Treatment (Sclerotherapy)

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. Often, they are red or blue. They can be found on the legs and face and can cover either a very small or large area of the skin.

What Causes Spider Veins?

The heart pumps blood fill with oxygen and nutrients to the whole body through the arteries.

Veins then carry the blood from the body back to the heart. As your leg muscles squeeze, they push blood back to the heart from your lower body against the flow of gravity. Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps to prevent blood from flowing backwards as it moves up your legs. If the valves become weak, blood can leak back into the veins and collect there. As a result, the backup of blood can cause spider veins.

Spider veins can also be caused by the following:

  • Increasing age As you get older, the valves in your veins make weaken and not work as well.
  • Medical History Being born with weak vein valves increases your risk. Having family members with vein problems also increases your risk. About half of all people who have spider veins have a family member who has them too.
  • Hormonal Changes These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone also may contribute to the forming of spider veins.
  • Pregnancy During pregnancy, there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. The growing uterus also puts pressure on the veins. Spider veins usually appear with each additional pregnancy.
  • Obesity Being overweight or obese can put extra pressure on your veins. This can lead to varicose veins.
  • Lack of movement Sitting or standing for a long time may force your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart. This may be a bigger problem if you sit with your legs bent or crossed.
  • Sun exposure This can cause spider veins on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

SCLEROTHERAPY (SKLER-o-ther-a-pee) is the most common treatment for spider veins.

The doctor uses a needle to inject a liquid solution into the vein. The solution will cause the vein walls to swell, stick together, and seal shut. This stops the flow of blood, and the vein turns into scar tissue. The vein should start to fade a few weeks after injection.
